Recently, reports emerged on social media regarding discriminatory practices at a Chinese supermarket located in Abuja, Nigeria.
These reports prompted swift action from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), indicating a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination. The FCCPC closed down the Chinese supermarket on allegations of discriminating against Nigerians.
Investigation Unveils Discriminatory Practices by the Chinese supermarket
On Monday, April 22, 2024, FCCPC officials conducted a surprise visit to the supermarket premises. However, upon arrival, they discovered that the owner, Cindy Liu Bei, had absconded with her family. CCTV footage confirmed their departure at 8:26 am, just before the arrival of the FCCPC team.
Statement from FCCPC
Boladale Adeyinka, the Director for Surveillance and Investigation at FCCPC, addressed the media following the closure of the supermarket. She emphasized the purpose of their visit, stating that it aimed to verify the allegations of discrimination circulating on social media.
Adeyinka confirmed that the supermarket had been sealed externally, indicating the seriousness of the matter. Moreover, she revealed that if the owner fails to appear before the commission tribunal, the supermarket will remain closed.
Commitment to Upholding Consumer Rights
The swift action taken by the FCCPC underscores the government’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that businesses operate ethically and inclusively. Discrimination of any form will not be tolerated, and those found guilty will face legal consequences.
The closure of the Chinese supermarket serves as a reminder that discriminatory practices have no place in society. It also highlights the importance of social media in holding businesses accountable for their actions. The Nigerian government’s proactive response sends a clear message that discrimination will be met with decisive action, safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens.
