Nigerian director and actor Lateef Adedimeji recently shared insights about his early career earnings, revealing that he was significantly underpaid despite landing major roles in movies back in 2014.
In a candid discussion on the ‘Deep Dive’ podcast hosted by comedian Teju Babyface, Adedimeji reflected on the financial struggles he faced at the beginning of his acting career. He described that period as a crucial learning phase, where the experience gained was more valuable than the paycheck.
The star of ‘Jagun Jagun’ disclosed that in 2014, he earned as little as N4,000 for a main role. It wasn’t until 2015 that he began receiving higher payments ranging from N100,000 to N200,000 per role.
“If I tell people that I wasn’t collecting N100,000, N200,000 until 2015/16, a lot of people would not believe me,” Adedimeji remarked. “Before then, the highest I collected for a lead role was either N4,000, N5,000, or N10,000. I was paid that low back in 2014 because it was more like a learning process.”
Adedimeji’s story highlights the often unrecognized financial struggles actors face at the beginning of their careers and underscores the dedication required to succeed in the entertainment industry.
