In a move that signals a fresh direction for Nigeria’s education sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The decision represents a notable generational shift within one of Nigeria’s most important education agencies. At just 39 years old, Professor Aina is set to become the youngest person to ever lead JAMB. He will officially take over from Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose widely respected tenure comes to an end on July 31, 2026.

The End of a Defining Era

Professor Oloyede’s time in office has been widely regarded as one of the most impactful periods in the history of JAMB. When he assumed leadership in 2016, the board faced several structural and operational challenges, including inefficiencies in revenue management and credibility concerns.

Over the course of ten years, Oloyede led a comprehensive transformation of the institution. His administration introduced stricter financial discipline, strengthened the Computer-Based Test system, and improved transparency across the board’s operations.

One of the most remarkable aspects of his tenure was the dramatic turnaround in JAMB’s financial performance. Prior to his appointment, total remittances to the Federal Government between 1978 and 2016 were less than ₦50 million. In contrast, within his first full year in office in 2017, JAMB remitted an impressive ₦7.8 billion.

By the end of his tenure, the board had contributed more than ₦20.7 billion in operating surpluses to the national treasury. This was achieved while also funding key infrastructural and technological upgrades across its operations nationwide.

Oloyede’s legacy is one of reform, accountability, and institutional strengthening. As he prepares to leave office, many observers agree that he has set a high standard for his successor.

Meet Professor Segun Aina

With the transition approaching, attention has shifted to Professor Segun Aina, whose appointment has generated significant interest due to his age, background, and expertise.

According to the presidency, Aina was carefully selected for his strong grounding in technology, public systems, and institutional development. His career reflects a consistent focus on using digital innovation to solve large-scale administrative challenges.

From NYSC to National Leadership

One of the most compelling aspects of Aina’s story is his long-standing connection with JAMB. His journey with the examination body began during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, when he served as a corps member within the organization.

That early experience provided him with firsthand insight into how national admission processes are managed. It also sparked his interest in improving the systems that govern student placement and examination administration in Nigeria.

Now, years later, he returns to the same institution in a leadership capacity, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a vision shaped by both academic and practical exposure.

Strong Academic Foundation

Professor Aina’s academic journey reflects a solid foundation in engineering and digital systems. He pursued his higher education in the United Kingdom, where he earned multiple degrees in fields related to computing and electrical engineering.

He obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent in 2008. He then proceeded to Loughborough University, where he completed a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security in 2009.

Driven by a passion for advanced research, he went on to earn a PhD in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Digital Signal Processing, from the same institution in 2015.

In addition to his technical education, Aina also attended the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School, equipping him with leadership and administrative skills necessary for high-level public service.

A Rising Star in Academia

Before his appointment as JAMB Registrar, Aina had already established himself as a respected figure in Nigeria’s academic community. He became one of the youngest professors in the field of Computer Engineering at the age of 39.

He is currently affiliated with the Department of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where he has contributed to teaching, research, and institutional development.

His work in academia has focused on areas such as network systems, digital infrastructure, and data processing, all of which are highly relevant to the evolving demands of examination bodies in the digital age.

Interestingly, he is expected to turn 40 in July 2026, around the same period he formally assumes office at JAMB.

Experience Across Examination Bodies

Beyond academia, Professor Aina brings extensive experience working with national examination agencies. Over the past 15 years, he has served as a systems and ICT consultant for several key institutions.

These include the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and various State Ministries of Education.

Through these roles, he has contributed to the design and improvement of examination systems, data management processes, and digital security frameworks. This experience is expected to play a crucial role in his new position.

The Task Ahead

As he prepares to take over leadership at JAMB, Professor Aina faces the challenge of building on the solid foundation laid by his predecessor while addressing emerging issues in the education sector.

JAMB remains responsible for managing the admission process for millions of candidates each year through its Computer-Based Test platform. While significant progress has been made, challenges such as cyber threats, infrastructure limitations, and system reliability continue to demand attention.

Aina’s background in network security and digital systems positions him well to address these concerns. Observers expect him to introduce further innovations that will enhance efficiency, strengthen security, and improve user experience for candidates and institutions alike.

He is also a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) as well as the global Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

A Symbol of Youth Inclusion

The appointment of a 39-year-old professional to head a major federal agency has been widely welcomed, particularly among young Nigerians. Many see it as a sign that the government is opening up leadership opportunities to a new generation of skilled professionals.

In a country where youth make up a significant portion of the population, such appointments are often viewed as a step toward more inclusive governance.

As Professor Segun Aina prepares to assume office, expectations are high. His blend of academic excellence, technical expertise, and practical experience has positioned him as a promising leader for the next phase of JAMB’s evolution.

With the groundwork laid by Professor Oloyede and a renewed focus on innovation, the board appears set to continue its transformation in an increasingly digital and competitive global education landscape.
