The Nigerian military has recorded a significant operational success in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in the North-East, dealing what authorities describe as a major setback to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). In a coordinated series of operations under Operation Hadin Kai, troops neutralized more than 50 heavily armed terrorists in Borno State and eliminated a senior figure within the group’s leadership structure.
According to an official statement released by the Defence Headquarters and signed by spokesperson Major General Samaila Mohammed Uba, the operations combined air power, intelligence gathering, and ground offensives to strike multiple insurgent positions across remote parts of the Lake Chad Basin. Among those confirmed killed was a high-value ISWAP commander identified as Khalifa Umar, whose role within the group’s inner leadership circle is now considered a major loss to the organisation.

Targeting the Shura Council Leadership
Military authorities disclosed that Khalifa Umar was not an ordinary field fighter but a prominent member of ISWAP’s Shura Council, which serves as the group’s highest decision-making body. The council is responsible for strategic planning, operational coordination, ideological direction, and logistical oversight across insurgent territories.
As a senior figure within this structure, Umar was believed to have contributed directly to key operational decisions and the management of resources used by fighters operating around the Lake Chad region. Security analysts suggest that his elimination will likely disrupt internal coordination and weaken communication between different ISWAP cells operating in the North-East.
His death comes shortly after the reported elimination of another senior ISIS-linked figure, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, in a separate intelligence-backed operation last month. Officials say these successive strikes reflect a sustained intelligence-driven effort aimed at dismantling the upper hierarchy of terrorist networks operating in the region.

Details of the Joint Air and Ground Operation
The Defence Headquarters explained that the success of the mission was made possible through the seamless coordination of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance systems, air interdiction units, and ground troops.
The operation began with precision airstrikes targeting fortified insurgent positions located around Kirta and Arina Ciki, both of which are known island enclaves within the Lake Chad waterways. The strikes reportedly caught the insurgents by surprise, destroying hideouts and eliminating several fighters, including key commanders gathered at the locations.
Following the aerial bombardment, ground forces moved swiftly into the affected areas, carrying out clearance operations along the Kukawa axis. During these advances, troops engaged fleeing militants attempting to escape the impact of the airstrikes. Several insurgents were neutralized in the process, while others abandoned weapons and equipment as they retreated deeper into surrounding terrain.
Military sources further noted that the sustained pressure from both air and ground operations has significantly disrupted insurgent strongholds in the islands, forcing surviving fighters to vacate well-fortified positions and move into more exposed mainland areas where they are increasingly vulnerable to tracking and engagement.
Disruption of Support Networks and Internal Collaboration
In addition to battlefield successes, Operation Hadin Kai also recorded important gains in dismantling the logistical and intelligence support systems sustaining insurgent activities.
Security forces arrested three suspected ISWAP informants and logistics suppliers in separate operations conducted within Maiduguri and surrounding communities. These individuals were allegedly responsible for providing frontline fighters with essential supplies such as food, fuel, and operational intelligence.
In a related development, authorities also confirmed the arrest of a serving soldier who had deserted his post with a service weapon. Investigations indicate that the individual may have been collaborating with criminal elements linked to insurgent supply chains.
Items recovered during these operations include a military-grade rifle with loaded ammunition magazines, an operational logistics vehicle believed to have been used for supply movement, and approximately 30 litres of petrol intended for insurgent activities in remote locations.

Wider Operational Context in 2026
Military officials have described the recent successes as part of a broader shift in strategy within the North-East theatre, moving from defensive containment to more proactive and intelligence-led offensive operations. This approach, supported by air power and improved coordination between units, has reportedly increased pressure on insurgent groups operating across the region.
A review of recent engagements highlights a consistent pattern of high-casualty outcomes for terrorist elements across multiple locations:
- In January 2026, over 80 terrorists were neutralized during an operation at Mallam Fatori, where an attempted assault on a military base was repelled.
- In March 2026, coordinated air and ground operations along the border area and Mallam Fatori region led to the elimination of more than 75 insurgents.
- In May 2026, troops thwarted an attack on the 27th Brigade in Buni Gari, Yobe State, resulting in the neutralization of over 50 terrorists.
- On June 3, 2026, the latest operation in Kirta and Arina Ciki led to the killing of more than 50 terrorists, including a senior Shura Council member.
While security experts acknowledge that ISWAP and affiliated Boko Haram factions still retain the capacity to conduct sporadic guerrilla-style attacks, the repeated loss of experienced commanders is believed to be gradually weakening their long-term planning and coordination capabilities.
The military high command has commended the troops involved in Operation Hadin Kai for their sustained efforts and professionalism, reiterating that operations will continue across the North-East until lasting peace and stability are fully restored to affected communities.
