Pep Guardiola Reflects on Retirement and Says He’ll Miss Facing Europe’s Giants Like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Pep Guardiola has once again sparked speculation about his future at Manchester City after suggesting that the end of his remarkable coaching career could be approaching. The 55-year-old manager, who has reshaped English football since arriving at the Etihad in 2016, is currently under contract until 2027, but talk of a possible early departure continues to grow.

Planning for life after Guardiola

Behind the scenes, City have reportedly begun preparing for the future. Since December, club officials have been considering potential succession plans, with former assistant Enzo Maresca among the names linked to the role. There have also been suggestions that Guardiola could remain at the club in a different capacity after stepping down from management.

Having already achieved enormous success with FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, Guardiola has repeatedly hinted this season that he may eventually step away from coaching. In July last year, he openly admitted that he plans to take a break after his time with City.

“I know that after this stage with City I’m going to stop, that’s for sure, it’s decided, more than decided,” he said. “I don’t know how long I’ll stop for… but I’m going to stop after this stage with City because I need to focus on myself.”

He will miss Europe’s biggest nights

Guardiola’s latest comments come ahead of an important UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash against Real Madrid. Speaking to TNT Sports, the Catalan manager admitted that the emotional intensity of elite football has played a role in shaping his thoughts about stepping away.

He said the biggest thing he will miss about management is the thrill of facing Europe’s top clubs.

“Those games, of course I will miss. I have incredible love for this place and I enjoy coming here. People in Madrid may not expect it, but I have a lot of respect for this institution,” Guardiola said.

He added that matches against clubs like FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich are special moments he will always cherish.“I will miss not going to Camp Nou. I’ll miss Bayern Munich… I will miss these nights because they are so special.”

The magic of English football

Beyond European nights, Guardiola also spoke about how much he enjoys the atmosphere of English football stadiums. He mentioned grounds like Selhurst Park and Goodison Park as places that capture the unique spirit of the Premier League.

“I’ll miss Selhurst Park as well, I love it. Premier League, these stadiums… Goodison Park… these are some of the reasons I adore England,” he said.

He also praised the charm of domestic cup competitions like the FA Cup, where top teams often face lower-division sides.

One last push for trophies

If this does turn out to be Guardiola’s final season at Manchester City, the legendary coach will be determined to end his time at the club with more silverware.

City are currently second in the Premier League table, trailing Arsenal F.C. by seven points as the title race continues. Guardiola will also be aiming to guide the club to another Champions League triumph after delivering their first-ever European crown in the 2022–23 season.

For now, Guardiola remains focused on the present. But his latest comments suggest that when his time at City finally ends, he may step away from the game for a while to focus on life beyond football.
