Bruno Fernandes Pulls the Strings as Manchester United F.C. Beat Aston Villa F.C. to Boost Top-Four Hopes

Bruno Fernandes produced another outstanding performance to lead Manchester United F.C. to a 3–1 victory over Aston Villa F.C., strengthening their push for a return to the UEFA Champions League.

The United captain registered his 15th and 16th assists of the season as the Red Devils defeated fellow top-four contenders Villa and tightened their hold on third place, opening up a three-point gap over Unai Emery’s side.

The first half, however, failed to reflect the quality expected from teams sitting third and fourth in the Premier League. It was a dull and uneventful opening period that produced just one shot on target — a header from Amad Diallo that was comfortably saved by Emiliano Martínez.

United improved significantly after the break, forcing Martínez into action again when he denied Bryan Mbeumo following a clever pass from a corner routine. That pressure soon paid off as United finally broke the deadlock from another corner. Casemiro rose to meet Fernandes’ delivery and scored his seventh goal of the season — the most he has ever managed in a single campaign.

Fernandes’ assist also matched a long-standing club record, equalling David Beckham’s tally for the most assists in a Premier League season for Manchester United.

Villa quickly responded, though, capitalising on some careless defending from the hosts. Ross Barkley, making his first league start since January 2025, seized the opportunity and levelled the score in the 64th minute.

United reacted swiftly. Once again, Fernandes was at the heart of the action, setting up Matheus Cunha, who ended a six-game goal drought by calmly finishing to restore United’s lead.

Substitute Benjamin Šeško later sealed the victory with a third goal, giving United a comfortable six-point cushion over fifth place — the final Champions League qualification spot.
