Proceedings in the widely followed corruption case involving former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El Rufai, were halted on Thursday after a Federal High Court in Kaduna announced a fresh adjournment. The court fixed June 1, 2026 as the new date to continue hearing, with a focus on resolving key pre trial applications filed by the defense team. The development means that the substantive hearing of the case will be delayed further as the court addresses preliminary legal issues that could shape the direction of the trial.
The adjournment came during a session presided over by Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, who acknowledged the importance of the motions raised by El Rufai’s legal representatives. The defense team, led by senior advocates Mustapha Abubakar and Oluwole Olaniyan, urged the court to consider two separate applications that challenge aspects of the charges brought against their client. These applications, if successful, could potentially weaken or narrow the case presented by the prosecution.
At the center of the matter is a 10 count charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, which accuses the former governor of engaging in financial misconduct during his time in office. The allegations include claims of unlawful conversion of public funds, possession of proceeds believed to be derived from corrupt activities, and violations of the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Act of 2022. Prosecutors have also linked the charges to several projects that were allegedly funded with public money but never executed, raising concerns about the management of state resources during his administration.

During Thursday’s proceedings, the court made it clear that addressing the preliminary motions was necessary before moving forward with the main trial. This effectively places the case in a temporary pause, as both the defense and prosecution prepare to argue their positions on the contested legal points. Legal observers note that such pre trial motions are a common feature in high profile cases, especially those involving complex financial allegations and multiple counts.
In addition to the adjournment, the court also delivered a ruling on an application filed by El Rufai seeking a modification of the bail conditions earlier imposed on him. The former governor had previously been granted bail in the sum of two hundred million naira, with two sureties required to provide the same amount. However, his legal team described the conditions as strict and requested adjustments to make compliance more feasible.
Justice Aikawa partially granted the request. One of the key prayers put forward by the defense was for the first surety to be allowed to present a bank guarantee instead of making a direct cash deposit of the full amount. The court declined this request, maintaining that the original financial requirement must stand. However, the judge showed some flexibility in another aspect of the application by approving a change in the recognition status required for the second surety.

Initially, the court had stipulated that the second surety must be recognized by the Kaduna State Council of Elders. In Thursday’s ruling, that requirement was relaxed, allowing the surety to instead be endorsed by a District Head. This adjustment was seen as a partial relief for the defense, as it simplifies one aspect of meeting the bail conditions while leaving the financial obligations unchanged.
Despite the modification, El Rufai remains subject to several restrictions tied to his bail. He is prohibited from making public statements regarding the case, a measure intended to preserve the integrity of the judicial process. In addition, he is required to deposit his international passport with the court, effectively limiting his ability to travel outside the country while the trial is ongoing. Until all bail conditions are fully met, he is to remain in the custody of the anti corruption agency.
Another important development during the session was the court’s decision to grant El Rufai access to medical care under supervision. His legal team had appealed to the court on compassionate grounds, citing the need for specialized treatment related to dental and eye health. The request highlighted concerns about his well being while in detention and sought permission for him to receive appropriate medical attention.
In response, Justice Aikawa directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to facilitate his visits to designated healthcare facilities whenever necessary. The approved facilities include Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye Q Hospital, both located in Abuja. The court emphasized that these visits must be carried out under strict supervision and that El Rufai must be returned to custody immediately after each appointment.

This ruling reflects a balance between ensuring the defendant’s access to essential healthcare and maintaining the custodial arrangements required by the court. Legal analysts note that such provisions are not uncommon in cases where defendants raise legitimate health concerns while in detention.

The case against El Rufai is part of a broader legal effort examining the financial activities of his administration. Alongside him in the current trial is a co defendant, Joel Adoga, who also faces charges related to the alleged offenses. Like El Rufai, Adoga has pleaded not guilty, setting the stage for what is expected to be a detailed and closely watched legal battle.
Beyond this particular case, there are other proceedings connected to individuals who served in the former governor’s administration. Just days before the latest court session, the same Federal High Court ordered El Rufai’s former Chief of Staff, Bashir Mohammed Saidu, to begin presenting his defense in a separate case involving alleged money laundering totaling one hundred and fifty five million naira. This development has added to the perception that authorities are conducting a comprehensive review of financial transactions linked to the previous government.
Public interest in the case remains high, with many observers viewing it as a significant test of accountability within the political system. The outcome of the pre trial motions scheduled for hearing on June 1 is expected to play a crucial role in determining how the case proceeds. If the defense succeeds in striking out certain charges or evidence, it could reshape the prosecution’s strategy. On the other hand, if the court dismisses the applications, the trial will likely move forward in full, with both sides presenting detailed arguments and evidence.

For now, the adjournment means that the legal process will continue at a measured pace, with attention focused on procedural matters before substantive issues are addressed. While delays of this nature can be frustrating for those following the case, they are often necessary to ensure that all legal questions are properly resolved and that the trial proceeds in accordance with due process.
As the new hearing date approaches, both the defense and prosecution are expected to refine their arguments and prepare for what could be a pivotal stage in the proceedings. The case continues to stand out as one of the most closely watched legal battles in Kaduna State, reflecting broader questions about governance, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria.
