In Anambra State, political conversations have once again been stirred by fresh speculation suggesting that two of the state’s most influential parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), may be quietly exploring some form of understanding ahead of the 2027 general elections. The rumours, which have circulated widely in political circles and across social media platforms over the past few weeks, suggested that both parties could be moving toward a tacit working relationship or at least a softening of their usual rivalry.
However, the APC leadership in Anambra has firmly rejected these claims, describing them as unfounded, misleading, and politically motivated. According to the party, there is no form of alliance, merger discussion, or behind the scenes cooperation with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration or the APGA structure in the state.
The denial comes at a time when political actors in Anambra are already beginning to reposition themselves following the conclusion of the November 2025 governorship election, which returned Governor Soludo for another term. With attention gradually shifting toward 2027, where national and state level contests are expected to be highly competitive, political narratives in the state have become increasingly sensitive to interpretation.
How the Rumours Began and Why They Spread Quickly
The speculation about a possible understanding between APC and APGA did not originate from any official announcement. Instead, it developed gradually from a combination of social interactions, political observations, and interpretations of recent events involving key figures from both parties.
Some of the early triggers included public appearances where prominent APC members were seen engaging cordially with APGA stakeholders at social and community events in Awka and other parts of the state. In a political environment as competitive as Anambra, even casual interactions between rival party figures can quickly become material for speculation. Observers began to suggest that these interactions may signal a deeper, more strategic alignment rather than ordinary political courtesy.
The narrative gained further momentum on social media, where commentators and self styled political analysts began to speculate that the APC might be reconsidering its posture toward the Soludo administration. Some argued that the party, traditionally seen as the main opposition force in the state, could be exploring a cooperative arrangement in anticipation of a larger political realignment at the national level.

A particular line of speculation suggested that both APC and APGA could be informally aligning against the growing influence of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has recently gained attention as a potential third force in Nigerian politics. This theory gained traction among supporters of former Labour Party figures who have found a political home in the ADC and are believed to be building momentum ahead of future elections.
Despite the widespread circulation of these claims, no concrete evidence emerged to support them, prompting APC leaders in Anambra to step forward and address the matter directly.
APC Leadership Responds and Clarifies Its Position
The official response came during a press briefing held at the APC state secretariat in Awka. Speaking on behalf of the party, the State Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike, dismissed the rumours in strong terms, insisting that the APC remains firmly in opposition in Anambra State and is not engaged in any form of political collaboration with APGA.
According to Ejidike, the suggestion that the party is working behind the scenes with Governor Soludo or his political structure is completely false and does not reflect the current reality within the APC. He described the reports as the product of political mischief and deliberate attempts to create confusion within the electorate.
He emphasized that while political parties may interact at public functions and community events, such interactions should not be mistaken for strategic alliances or electoral partnerships. In his words, the APC remains committed to building a strong opposition structure capable of challenging APGA dominance in the state.

Ejidike further explained that the party’s ideological stance remains distinct from that of APGA, pointing out that APC’s national philosophy under its Renewed Hope agenda is fundamentally different from APGA’s more localized governance approach in Anambra. He argued that these differences make any form of merger or alliance unnecessary and unlikely.
He also addressed concerns that the party might be softening its opposition stance, making it clear that APC is not engaged in any negotiation for coalition, collaboration, or shared political arrangement with APGA at any level, including local government politics.
Instead, he noted that the party is currently focused on internal restructuring and reconciliation following the 2025 elections. According to him, these internal efforts are aimed at strengthening unity within the party and positioning it more effectively for the 2027 general elections.
Ejidike was particularly firm when addressing the idea of political compromise, stating that the APC’s long term ambition in Anambra remains unchanged. The party, he said, is working toward winning control of the Government House in Awka, not participating as a subordinate partner in any arrangement with its rivals.
APGA Maintains Calm Amid Speculation
While the APC moved quickly to dismiss the rumours, reactions from APGA were relatively calm and restrained. Officials within the party and the state government largely avoided engaging in public disputes over the claims, suggesting that the speculation had little impact on their immediate political priorities.
Sources close to Governor Soludo’s administration indicated that the governor remains focused on implementing his development agenda, often referred to as the Solution Agenda, which emphasizes infrastructure development, economic reforms, and governance improvements across the state.
From APGA’s perspective, the political conversation about alliances appears unnecessary at this stage, particularly given that the party recently secured a fresh mandate from the electorate in the 2025 governorship election. This position has contributed to a sense of political stability within the administration, reducing the urgency for coalition building or defensive political arrangements.
However, political observers note that APGA’s relationship with the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu of the APC, has often been described as cordial. This relationship has occasionally fueled speculation that there may be informal understandings between both parties at different levels of governance, even if no official alliance exists.
Despite these interpretations, APGA has not issued any formal statement confirming or denying any political arrangement with the APC, choosing instead to maintain focus on governance activities.

Broader Political Calculations Ahead of 2027
The emergence of these rumours reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian politics, where parties often engage in strategic positioning well ahead of major elections. With 2027 gradually coming into view, political actors across the country are already reassessing alliances, voter bases, and potential threats.
In Anambra, the situation is further complicated by the increasing visibility of the African Democratic Congress, which has attracted several prominent political figures in recent months. The party’s growing profile has introduced a new dynamic into the political landscape, forcing both APC and APGA to consider how to maintain or expand their influence among voters.
For the APC, distancing itself from APGA at this stage appears to be a strategic decision aimed at preserving its identity as the main opposition force in the state. Party leaders believe that maintaining a clear distinction from the ruling party in Anambra will help them appeal to voters who are dissatisfied with the current administration but are not yet convinced by emerging alternatives.
At the same time, APGA continues to rely heavily on its established grassroots structure and its long standing identity as a home grown political movement in Anambra. The party’s slogan, which emphasizes local ownership and cultural alignment, continues to resonate with many voters in the state.

A Tense but Controlled Political Atmosphere
Despite the noise generated by speculation, the political atmosphere in Anambra remains relatively stable. There is no indication of formal cooperation between APC and APGA, nor is there evidence of active negotiations toward such an arrangement. Instead, what exists is a cautious and controlled political environment where parties are carefully managing perceptions while preparing for future contests.
The APC continues to position itself as a viable alternative to APGA governance, while APGA maintains confidence in its electoral mandate and governance record. Both parties appear aware that any misinterpretation of political interactions could easily be weaponized in the lead up to future elections.
For now, the so called alliance rumours have been firmly rejected by the APC, and APGA has shown little interest in engaging with the narrative. Yet in a political landscape as fluid as Anambra’s, where alliances can shift and narratives evolve quickly, observers expect that speculation will continue to surface as 2027 approaches.
What remains clear is that both parties are preparing for a competitive political season ahead, even if they currently stand on opposite sides of the divide.
