A profound sense of grief has descended on the National Youth Service Corps community, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and families across the country following a devastating road accident in Adamawa State that claimed six lives. Among the deceased were four serving corps members, a soldier, and a civilian passenger, all of whom lost their lives in a horrific collision along the busy Yola to Mubi highway.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, has once again brought into sharp focus the persistent dangers on Nigerian highways and the vulnerability of young graduates posted far from home for their mandatory national service.

According to official information released by the Adamawa State Police Command through its spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, the accident happened at about 1:50 p.m. on June 3, 2026, around the Narehi axis located within the Girei and Song Local Government areas.

The crash involved two vehicles, a military gun truck and a commercial Toyota Hummer bus conveying passengers. Reports indicate that the military vehicle was traveling from Gombi toward the state capital, Yola, while the commercial bus was moving in the opposite direction toward Mubi. Some eyewitnesses suggested that the bus might have originated from Kano and was on a long distance trip at the time of the accident.

Preliminary findings from the police and accounts from individuals at the scene suggest that the collision occurred during a risky overtaking maneuver. The military vehicle, reportedly moving at high speed, attempted to overtake another vehicle along a bend in the road. In doing so, it entered the opposite lane, directly into the path of the oncoming commercial bus, leading to a violent head on crash.

The impact was devastating. The commercial bus lost control, overturned, and immediately burst into flames. Due to the intensity of the collision, the structure of the bus was badly damaged, trapping the occupants inside. Within moments, the fire spread rapidly, leaving no opportunity for escape.

Witnesses described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene, with bystanders making desperate but unsuccessful attempts to rescue those trapped inside the burning vehicle. Sadly, all five occupants of the bus were burnt beyond recognition.

The military gun truck also sustained significant damage in the crash. One soldier on board died instantly from the injuries sustained during the collision, while other occupants were reportedly affected to varying degrees.

Emergency responders, including police operatives and local rescue teams, later arrived at the scene and worked to extinguish the fire before recovering the remains of the victims. The process of identification proved difficult due to the severity of the burns.

However, authorities were able to confirm that four of the deceased passengers were members of the National Youth Service Corps who had been officially deployed to Adamawa State for their service year. Two of them were identified as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both indigenes of Kaduna State.

The identities of the remaining two corps members, as well as the fifth civilian passenger, are yet to be confirmed as their bodies were severely burnt. Officials are currently collaborating with the NYSC state secretariat to verify their identities through deployment records and other official documentation. The identity of the deceased soldier has also not been publicly disclosed, pending proper notification of military authorities and next of kin.

All six bodies have since been evacuated from the crash site and deposited at the Specialist Hospital in Yola, where further examinations and necessary procedures are being carried out.

In his reaction, the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the NYSC management, describing the incident as a painful and irreplaceable loss.

He noted that the victims, particularly the corps members, were young individuals who had committed themselves to national service, only for their lives to be cut short in such a tragic manner.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns about road safety across Nigeria, especially on highways known for their difficult terrain and high accident rates. The Yola to Mubi road, where the crash occurred, is widely regarded as a challenging route due to its sharp bends, narrow sections, and lack of adequate safety barriers.

Experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of reckless driving, particularly high speed overtaking on such roads. This latest tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the consequences of such actions.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including any mechanical issues or human errors that may have contributed to the incident.

For now, the nation mourns the loss of promising young lives and a dedicated service member. Families, friends, and colleagues are left to grapple with the sudden and heartbreaking reality of their absence.

What began as ordinary journeys for those involved ended in unimaginable tragedy, leaving behind a somber call for greater caution, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and improved safety measures on Nigerian roads.
